Milk allergy recommendations

Milk allergy recommendations

GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS

If the patient has been diagnosed with an allergy to cow’s milk, a strict milk-free diet should be followed, along with its derivatives and products that may contain milk, while their tolerance to milk is checked.

Milk from other mammals such as goat or sheep should also be excluded from the diet, except in very specific cases and where specified by the allergist.

If breastfeeding continues, the mother should follow a cow’s milk protein free diet.

If artificial feeding is established, special formulas will be used as recommended by the allergist.

Attention should be paid to possible accidental contact with milk because it can maintain an allergy. Products labelled as “non-dairy” often contain sodium caseinate which should also be avoided.

Cookware including cutlery and other utensils must be kept meticulously clean and must not contain traces of dairy.

Medical reports of food allergy, recommendations on the avoidance of food involved in the allergy and possible treatments to an allergic reaction, should be given to teachers and carers of the child, if the child eats at school or participates in children’s campsites or day trips.

If your allergist has prescribed and trained you in the use of adrenaline, remember that you must have an injection for the school and for any trips. The administration of adrenaline should be immediate and should never delay or substitute going to the emergency services.

Even if the child does not present any symptoms you should never reintroduce milk on your own – always consult your allergist and wait for the appropriate study to be made.
